Here Is an Example of a University of Washington Personal Statement
I know what I want to do while attending college, which is earn my degree in Psychology. I’ve come to the realization that through my personal experiences and participation in volunteering organizations, helping people is my true passion and I would like to continue broadening the amount of lives I touch. Being a military dependent, I’m familiar with the emotional years of being a teenager and the many aspects of transitioning into a new environment.
Moving in the middle of my sophomore year was probably the hardest thing that I have ever had to do. I feel that I would’ve been able to adjust my negative and stubborn attitude more smoothly if I had had a more supportive and understanding system around me. I want to be able to help children and teens facing the same problems as I did by being available to them to talk to and build a trusting relationship so that they would not have to experience the unfortunate events that I did. At my arrival in a new state, I isolated myself from all my peers and classmates, purposely not making any friends. It was difficult for me to feel comfortable with unfamiliar faces surrounding me. I adapted a bitter attitude that was reflected through my actions towards other. I kept to myself and didn’t let anyone into my life.
However, the move was definitely a beneficial self-learning process and it undeniably made me the person I am today. My priorities gradually changed. I joined clubs and becoming more involved in school activities that expanded my desire to help others. I go to soup kitchens on the weekends and serve food to those less fortunate and participate in campaigns for food drives or donating events.
My senior year of high school, I was elected to hold one of the officers’ positions in a community service club. I take all my duties in performing my tasks to the best of my abilities very seriously. Although I’ve only been secretary for a year, I feel like this experience has already improved my leadership and communication skills. More importantly, taking on this responsibility secured my plans for the future to help people and really helped me realize that this is something I could never get tired of doing.
